The scale modelling community is massive and they sure are a passionate bunch. Whether it’s 1:50 scale models of heavy haulage trailers, aircraft or their favourite pop culture icon, there’s a place where they can all come together to admire techniques and feats. That place in Brisbane is the Queensland Model Hobbies Expo (QMHE).
The QSMC started back in the 1990’s, as there was no specialised event in Brisbane for those who had a keen interest in collecting diecasts or who modelled themselves.
Prior this this event, many modelling groups and clubs would attend the Pet and Hobby Show. But many of the attendees and stallholders felt like “second class citizens” and more often than not pushed off to one end of the Brisbane Exhibition Centre pavilion.
Enter the Queensland Model Hobbies Expo. This event is now the second largest competition in Australia, with over 60 categories and attracts visitors from all over Australia and New Zealand. The QMHE showcases all forms of scale modelling from Queensland and Northern NSW, from military vehicles and rocket ships to dragons and other fantasy creatures. It’s a family-friendly event with workshops, demonstrations and the main event – the Annual Queensland Scale Modelling Championship, which approximately 400 scale modellers enter every year.
