NHVR the latest to join National Road Safety Program

It’s another win for road safety across the nation. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has become one of the core funders of the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP), furthering their commitment to engage proactively with the commercial road transport industry. They join the likes of other companies and associations including AGL, Vodafone, Toll, Coca Cola Amatil and Australian Road Safety Foundation to build initiatives which will have a meaningful impact on work related road injury and fatality.

NRSPP Manager Jerome Carslake commented on the announcement saying the goals of each party are quite similar, with the partnership set to strengthen their strategies.

“By partnering with, and being supported by, the NHVR, NRSPP can be a powerful tool in the NHVR’s strategy to provide both safe and productive journeys for the heavy vehicle industry” he said.

With many trailer manufacturers already adhering to NHVR law, Industry Codes of Practice and Performance Based Standards, it seems likely that their strategy for improvement on our roads will roll out to the heavy transport trailer industry in the near future.

What is the NRSPP?

From senior management to on-the-ground workers, the National Road Safety Partnership Program believe a positive road safety culture is everyone’s responsibility.

This program is a collective group of Australian businesses who partner to develop better road safety culture. Their aim is to save lives without the red tape.

On the NRSPP website, you can discover tools, evidence, networks and support to empower everyone in your business to make change, not only in the workplace but in everyday life.

Their activities involve the creation of case studies, working groups (for example, “Driver headspace”, “safe use of mobiles in vehicles” and “influencing driver behaviour”), thought leadership pieces, steering committee, workplace organisations road safety guide, program funding, benchmarking tools and program management.

Queensland backs NRSPP too

Earlier this year, the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) ventured into a $50,000 funding partnership with NRSPP. This was the first time Queensland Government has actively committed to a vision of zero road deaths and serious injuries. The program is now funded by state governments in New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria as well as the National Transport Commission and Australian Road Research Board, taking government funding to $300,000.

“Road accidents and trauma have a devastating impact on our community, with significant physical, mental and financial costs to Australian businesses,” said NRSPP Chair, Professor Ian Johnston, in a statement. “Through the valuable support of governments and strong corporate leadership, we are helping the business community make a stand for road safety.”
