As we discussed in Part 1 of our two-part series on Australia’s trailer fleet, the real numbers behind Australia’s trailer fleet have been released by the Australian Road Transport Suppliers’ Association (ARTSA), together with the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS). Based on data collected in 2014 and 2015, the statistics revealed some interesting figures.
Measurable, transparent figures for the first time
In part two, we’re looking at some of those figures in closer detail and asking what it means for those of us involved in the transport and trailer manufacturing industry.
A big result of the recent findings is that for the first time, the numbers are measurable. Cooperation between ARTSA, NEVDIS and the TIC means the entire heavy haulage transport industry will benefit from increased transparency.
Silver linings
The key numbers released by ARTSA confirmed what many in the industry already knew – the transport sector is facing massive change and a contracting market. But there are reasons to be cheerful:
- 95% of all trailer VINS ARTSA examined as part of the study started with a ‘6’ – implying that they are Australian made trailers.
- According to ARTSA Chairman Dr Peter Hart, the figures indicate that “there is an Australian trailer manufacturing industry that is producing more than $1.3 billion per annum” – a positive result considering the downturn in the resources industry.
- The ARTSA figures do not include stock trailers – because they do not get registered. The agricultural and livestock sector is a growing one – and trailer manufacturers are already adapting their range of products to serve the needs of their industry.
- The quality and reliability provided by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) is unbeatable when it comes to safety, with the ARTSA and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator recommending operators work only with trusted OEMs.
