Shiny New Drop Deck Trailer for Thurston’s Transport

A dreary Queensland day didn’t take the shine off Thurston’s Transport’s new O’Phee drop deck trailer when they came to pick it up earlier this month. The Western New South Wales-based harvest freight specialist will be putting their trailer straight to work hauling bales of cotton and hay around the country. This will be the sixth O’Phee trailer to join the Thurston fleet and pairs perfectly with their drop-deck widener purchased a few years ago. They also own two O’Phee Flat-tops, two convertibles and a road train converter dolly.

“I’ve known Mick O’Phee for a long time and I’ve always found O’Phee trailers to be a very good product,” said Thurston’s Transport Managing Director, Steven Thurston. “I’d rather my money go to someone I know than someone I don’t.”

Thurston’s Transport began their operation in 1946 when 17 year old Bob Thurston did the mail run in the Walgett district of Western NSW. He focused on gravel work and general freight, eventually building up to carrying livestock, wool, grain and general freight thanks to the help of his family. The Thurston family are people of their word, with old fashioned traditional service and freight safety at the core of their business.

Their new O’Phee Drop Deck Trailer features five-inch coaming rails and runs Fuwa K-Hitch axles with drum brakes and leaf spring suspension. It also boasts a Ringfeder coupling to enable a dolly and second trailer to be connected.

“I bought it for hay and cotton haulage – it can carry nine bales of cotton each weighing 2.2 tonnes – but since I ordered it the rain has come and the hay work has dropped off pretty much,” said Thurston. “But the weather will turn dry again, it always does, and we’ll be back hauling hay again.”

The lower deck height of the drop-deck was purpose-built for Thurston’s Transport, so that they can maximise the number of cotton and hay bales that can be carried within height restriction limits.
